Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is observed every October to mourn those who have died from intimate partner violence, celebrate survivors, and connect advocates working to end abuse. First launched nationwide in October 1987 and officially designated by Congress in 1989, the campaign brings vital attention to an issue affecting more than 10 million Americans every year.
The national campaign theme focuses on building deep solidarity and actionable public support under the message “With Survivors, Always”. Advocacy groups are simultaneously leveraging the #Every1KnowsSome1 initiative to highlight the widespread natural of domestic abuse, emphasizing that it spans physical, emotional, digital, and financial control across all demographics.
The purple ribbon serves as the universal symbol of courage, survival, and dedication to ending abuse. Throughout October, individuals and communities are encouraged to take tangible actions to spread awareness.
If you or someone you know is experiencing relation abuse, free confidential support is available 24/7. Advocates can assist with safety planning, local shelter referrals, and legal guidance. You are not alone, and you do not have to navigate this in silence. Free, confidential support is available.
