Back To School Time!
For families affected by domestic violence, the return to school can create additional stress. A change in school schedules may mean changes in transportation, childcare, communication, and custody arrangements. Survivors may also be navigating court orders, school records, confidentiality concerns, or interactions with an abusive former partner.
Schools and community organizations can play an important role in helping families feel supported and safe. Simple actions - such as listening to concerns, protecting confidential information, understanding safety plans, and connecting families with appropriate resources - can help create a supportive environment for children and parents.
As a community, we can help create an environment where survivors feel believed rather than blamed.
Listen. Give survivors space to share without immediately telling them what they should do.
Believe. Take concerns about abuse seriously.
Respect Their Choices. Remember that survivors have the right to make decisions about their own lives.
Challenge Harmful Beliefs. Statements that blame survivors can create additional isolation and shame.
August reminds us that change can happen gradually. For survivors, a new beginning may not mean having everything figured out. It may simply mean taking the next safe step. As a community, we can help make those steps easier by creating spaces where survivors are met with compassion, dignity, respect, and support.
This month, let's remember that everyone deserves relationships built on safety, respect, trust, and equality.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you do not have to navigate it alone. At Friend to Friend, we are here to provide support and help you explore your options.
