Friend to Friend offers free safety planning to help ensure safety when fleeing from abuse. The resources below will provide an essential reference and starting point to build a plan that works for you, in your particular circumstances. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Once you are in a safe space, call Friend to Friend and we are here to assist you in preparing your Safety Plan.

Steps to take when leaving an abusive situation

  • Gather $50 or more in cash.
  • Collect birth certificates for you and your children.
  • Remember your check book.
  • Discuss a safety plan with your children for when you are not with them.
  • Pack extra clothing for you and your children, extra keys for your house and car, partner's SSN, bank account numbers, birth date, work place, and social security number.
  • Gather important papers.
  • Inform your children’s school, daycare etc. about who has permission to pick up your children and inquire about policies. Give them a copy of the protective order if you have one.
  • Inform your neighbors and landlord that your partner no longer lives with you and ask that they call the police if they see your abuser near your home. Let them know if you have a protective order against the abuser.
  • Get insurance Policies.
  • Keep the local shelter phone number close at hand.
  • Make a list of important phone numbers (family & friends).
  • Bring marriage certificate.
  • Open a bank account in your name in order to establish or increase independence.
  • Pick up a 911 cell phone at Friend to Friend office, if needed.
  • Pack sentimental valuables and photos.
  • Include any medication for you and your children.
